Visit Syracuse Raises Awareness of Human Trafficking

Human trafficking is something you hear about on the news, but how many people understand what it is or where it’s happening? When it comes to human trafficking in the hospitality and tourism industry, great strides are being made to tackle the issue in order to safely take action. Visit Syracuse, Inc., a CenterState CEO affiliate, is Onondaga County’s official marketing organization for tourism-related economic development. As a leader in the tourism industry, Visit Syracuse recognizes its important role to raise awareness within the community and disrupt this horrific crime.

Visit Syracuse is a proud member of the New York State Hospitality & Tourism Association (NYSH&TA). Through its efforts, the New York State Legislature provided hotels with the option to design their own informational cards containing the national human trafficking hotline number, or to use an information card designed by the state or federal government. Because so few people understand how human trafficking works, it’s important to remain alert and keep this discussion on the table in your travels and at home.

The No. 1 way to help stop sex trafficking, according to the U.S. Department of State, is to learn the warning signs and red flags of human trafficking. The NYSH&TA has included staff training requirements for hotel professionals in a proposal to the legislature to work toward in their next session.
