Empire State College – 40th Anniversary
SUNY Empire State College (ESC) opened its doors in 1971 to offer adult learners the opportunity to earn associate, bachelor's and master's degrees from the State University of New York. ESC has grown to seven locations in Central New York: Syracuse, Utica, Auburn, Binghamton, Ithaca, Watertown, and Fort Drum. Current enrollment is nearly 3,000 students locally with more than 20,200 students worldwide at 35 locations in New York state. The ESC CNY Center graduated 255 students in June.
Empire State College's rigorous programming tailors degrees to meet students' specific needs and the needs of the industry. To capitalize on the emerging green industry, ESC has developed a concentration in Business and Sustainability. New this year, ESC has agreements which broaden access and opportunity for Mohawk Valley and Herkimer County Community Colleges' students seeking to earn a bachelor's degree.
In an effort to allow students to maintain their work and family commitments, ESC's flexible modes of study have grown from independent studies, to include online courses, small seminars, and weekend residencies. ESC's International Distance Learning program has served students in 34 countries.
G.I. Jobs, the premier magazine for military personnel transitioning into civilian life, awarded ESC the 2012 designation of Military Friendly School. ESC has also been named the 2011 Recycler of the Year – Education Sector by the Onondaga County Resource Recovery Agency. In May, ESC CNY Center Dean Nikki Shrimpton was one of five women selected for the Annual CBS 5 Women in Leadership Awards.
